The Chinese characters, read from right to left, translate as Universal Love. The calligraphy is derived from a work by Sun Yat-sen. The original object, Universal Love Commemorative Banner, is held in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou. This work is part of my ongoing research project, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Drawing on Joseph Campbell’s comparative study of mythology, the project examines the symbolic hero’s journey as a grand narrative while placing it alongside my own lived experience—personal, subjective, and specific.
